About Me

Hi, my name is Melinna. I am the founder of 'More Than Hair Project'. I am a Caribbean girl who has lived in Leeds for the past 9 years. I returned to natural hair initially to relax it again, but I loved the renewed sense of self that I felt. 

I transitioned for a year before doing my big chop. During that time, I did lots of research, I spent hours reading up on natural haircare. Many times, well into the night.

About six months after I did the ‘big chop’ I started volunteering at a women’s charity. I was asked if there was anything, I was passionate about and could run a group on. I told them about my hours of research on natural hair care and when I got the green light, I started working on a power point presentation. It covered everything from detangling to protective styling and pH balance. 

Fast forward to almost two years later ‘More Than Hair Project’ was born. I started with a couple of events hosted at another charity I was volunteering for. When working on past events I found myself always having to say, “it’s more than just hair”, finally, I thought why not just call the project ‘More Than Hair’. 

I found that returning to natural hair is not just about hair but about reclaiming the power we have relinquished in more than one aspect of our lives. It is about loving and accepting our authentic selves. My heart has always been to share my experience and the experience of others to educate and empower people with curly/kinky hair. Combining it with my passion for healthy eating and staying fit is a holistic approach to self-care and achieving my natural hair goals and life goals.

I found that caring for my hair in its natural state turned out to be much more than I bargained for. I have found healing, meaning and purpose on my natural hair journey. I hope you will join me on this journey. I look forward to us learning and growing together.
